The TwiStool's design is rooted in the philosophy of Scandinavian design, which emphasizes simplicity, minimalism, and functionality. The stool embodies these principles, using a 2D material to create a 3D object with a clean, simple appearance, natural texture, and additional strength. The stool's form detail makes it ergonomically friendly and easy to carry around, making it a versatile piece of furniture.
One of the unique features of the TwiStool is its manufacturing process. Qian used the vacuum press technique, which involves bending glued maple veneer pieces in heat to create the stool's curving shape. This method allows for the production of all three legs with just one mould, significantly reducing manufacturing costs.
The TwiStool's design also takes into account user interaction. The slot design on the seat's surface allows for easy pick-up, and the curving detail at the bottom of the legs provides space to stretch the feet in a limited space setting. Furthermore, the stool adjusts to any floor situation with a stable three-point standing support.
Qian's TwiStool project, which took place in Copenhagen, Denmark, over seven weeks, was exhibited at the Din-Design In Design Exhibition during Milan Design Week in April 2018. The project involved extensive research into Scandinavian design and the design and manufacture process of veneer furniture. Qian visited numerous furniture design museums, design showrooms, and famous architectures in Denmark, Sweden, and Finland to gain insights into veneer furniture design and manufacturing.
The TwiStool's innovative design and manufacturing process earned it the Silver A' Furniture Design Award in 2018. The award is given to designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation, strong technical characteristics, and splendid artistic skill. The TwiStool, with its unique blend of aesthetics, ergonomics, and cost-effective production, certainly fits this description.
